Night-work supplement in Brazil: hours, percentage and how to calculate it
Published · Updated
A 20% night-work supplement for urban workers (10 p.m. to 5 a.m.) with a reduced hour of 52 minutes and 30 seconds, 25% for rural workers, extension after 5 a.m. and a calculation example.

*Urban workers who work between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. are entitled to a night-work supplement (adicional noturno) of at least 20% over the daytime hourly rate. In addition, the night hour is shorter: each hour counts as 52 minutes and 30 seconds, so 7 clock hours are worth 8 hours of work.*
Quick summary
- Urban: from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., a minimum supplement of 20% and a 52min30s hour (CLT, art. 73 — the CLT is Brazil's Consolidated Labor Laws).
- Rural: 25% — crop farming from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.; livestock from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. (Law 5,889/1973, art. 7).
- Domestic: 20%, with the reduced hour (LC 150/2015, art. 14).
- Extension: someone who works the night shift and continues after 5 a.m. also receives the supplement for those hours (TST Precedent 60 — the TST is the Superior Labor Court).
- Under-18s cannot work at night.
How to calculate
- Daytime hourly rate: salary ÷ divisor (220 for a 44-hour week).
- Night hour with supplement: daytime hourly rate × 1.2.
- Actual night hours: clock hours × 60 ÷ 52.5.
- Total: night hours × night hourly rate.
Example: salary of R$ 2,200 → hourly rate of R$ 10.00 → night hour of R$ 12.00. Working from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. (7 clock hours) equals 8 night hours → R$ 96.00 per night.
With the end of the 6x1 schedule, the weekly hours decrease and the monthly divisor tends to fall, increasing the hourly rate.
Knock-on effects
A night-work supplement paid regularly forms part of salary for vacation + 1/3, the 13th salary, FGTS (the Severance Indemnity Fund), notice period and overtime.
Step by step to check
- Check whether the night-work supplement appears separately on your payslip.
- Check whether the reduced hour was applied.
- Add up the hours after 5 a.m. if you kept working.
- If there is a difference, ask for a correction in writing or contact the union.
